Welcome to Archeology Oklahoma!
This website is primarily for supporting my Artifact Identification Day events which are free and open to the public. These events provide a local time and place where anyone may bring artifacts they have found to learn more about their discoveries, and about Oklahoma’s archeological heritage. Occasional items of interest about Oklahoma archeology may be added as this website is just being developed.

About Me
I am Mel Phillips of Oklahoma City. I grew up in eastern Kansas and graduated from Kansas State Teacher’s College in Emporia, Kansas. My interest in archaeology began when I found my first arrowhead at the age of ten. Although I have no formal education in archaeology, I have been an avocational archaeologist for seventy years.
My passion for understanding the prehistoric past through its artifacts has led me to share what I have learned “with anyone who will listen.” I began holding “Artifact Identification Events” in 2024, with locations including Chickasha, Kingfisher, Norman, Ponca City, Ada, Atoka, Pryor, Tahlequah, and Muldrow, Oklahoma.
For 2025, I have already scheduled events in Cordell, Clinton, Checotah, Paul’s Valley, Ardmore, and Okemah, Oklahoma, as well as Garnett, Kansas. I am planning to hold additional artifact identification events—mostly in county seat towns—averaging about one per month.
Some groups have started monthly meetings, primarily as “show and tell” sessions, to continue learning about Oklahoma prehistory and history. Please check the website calendar for upcoming scheduled events and local meetings.
